It's our last year in Chelan, WA before we upgrade the conference to a new resort location for 2018! Come one last time to the WSCSS Spring Conference at Campbells Resort from March 3rd-5th, 2017. Advocacy and Allyship is the theme, so come prepared to make a difference!
Keynote speakers will discuss historical and current issues that highlight courageous actions by those who stand with and for others, like Carl Wilkins (the only American to remain in Rwanda during the genocide in 1994).
Breakout sessions will deepen your content knowledge in civil and human rights issues (past and present) and meaningful ways to encourage allyship and advocacy in your students. Extended Saturday workshops will get participants up and moving to explore local case studies.
The 2017 Program of Sessions
The program for the 2017 Chelan Conference and Retreat is now available. Have a look at all the great sessions planned for you over our weekend in Chelan. There is something for everyone!
2017 Keynote Speakers
Friday Night Keynote: Carl Wilkens
Founder of The World Inside My Shoes, a non-profit educational and professional development organization to inspire and equip people to enter the world of “The Other.” Carl was a humanitarian and aid worker in Rwanda beginning in 1990; he was the only American to remain in the country during the 1994 genocide and his courageous actions saved hundreds of lives. He travels regionally and internationally to share his family’s experience of the genocide in 1994 but also to highlight the amazing recovery process Rwanda has been going through since then, including the vital role of women in government and the private sector.
Saturday Lunch Keynote: Raymond Jonas - The Decline of the West? Brexit and Trump in Historical Perspective
The British vote to leave the European Union, the rise of ethnic nationalism in Europe, and the election of Donald Trump in the US, have prompted speculation about whether we are witnessing the end of “the West.” This presentation examines this claim in comparative and historical perspective. Raymond Jonas is the Colonel Donald W. Wiethuechter Endowed Faculty Fellow in History at the University of Washington. His most recent work concerns African resistance to European expansion. The Battle of Adwa: African Victory in the Age of Empire aims both to narrate this signal event in global history and to follow the Adwa story as it rolls through African and European diasporic communities. A companion web site BattleOfAdwa.org augments and extends this work. His current research is a transnational history of the Mexican Second Empire.
Saturday Night Keynote: Kimberly Ambrose
A senior lecturer at the University of Washington Law School and Founder/Director of the Tools for Social Change: Race and Justice Clinic. Since 2011 the clinic has focused attention on racial disparities in the juvenile justice system. Before joining the UW faculty, she was a public defender representing indigent adults and juveniles in both child welfare and criminal proceedings. As a resource attorney for the Washington Defender Association, she provided training, technical assistance, and resources to public defense attorneys around Washington state.
In addition, workshops will be led by:
- The U.W. Jackson School
- Western Washington University
- The WA State Social Studies Cadre
- The World Affairs Council
