C-SPAN Classroom

Teaching & Learning during the 2008 Election Cycle

Greetings WSCSS Members,

As a social studies teacher with thirty years of classroom experience,
former NCSS and current Washington State Council for the Social Studies
board member, I'm writing to seek your assistance in an effort to contact
civics, government and social studies teachers in your state.

C-SPAN Classroom would like to provide your teachers access to an array of
free non-partisan curriculum resources that can be used during the 2008
election cycle and beyond. The resources are developed by C-SPAN, a private,
non-profit company created in 1979 by the cable television industry as a
public service. C-SPAN provides coverage of a variety of public affairs
events most notably the Congress, President and Supreme Court. A 2006 study
by the Pew Research Center identified CNN, 60 Minutes and C-SPAN as the top
three "most trusted sources" of news in the United States.

By registering for a free C-SPAN Classroom membership teachers will gain
access to a searchable database of video clips, student activities, teacher
resources, student contests and periodic special offers like free classroom
posters. By registering for a membership (
<http://www.c-spanclassroom.org/Registration.aspx>
http://www.c-spanclassroom.org/Registration.aspx) your teachers will also be
sent a free DVD of 17 C-SPAN video clips that can be used to teach important
and complex concepts in civics and government.

With the 2008 election cycle underway, K-12 teachers are looking for
rigorous, relevant and authentic resources to support standards based civics
and government instruction. C-SPAN Classroom (
<http://www.c-spanclassroom.org/> www.c-spanclassroom.org) provides teachers
with lessons and supplemental materials as well as unrestricted taping and
viewing rights for C-SPAN-produced programming. In three decades of teaching
high school civics, I found C-SPAN to be an indispensible source of bias
free primary sources. Thanks to C-SPAN, my students were able to master
essential concepts and demonstrate a deep understanding of American
government.

Please let me know if there is a website, digital newsletter or some other
vehicle that might be used to contact civics, government and social studies
teachers in your state. Attached to this note you will find a brochure that
provides additional information about C-SPAN Classroom. Along with Joanne
Wheeler, Vice President for Education Relations, I look forward to hearing
from you and know that C-SPAN Classroom can make a difference in the quality
of instruction offered to students in your state.

Regards,

Joe Gotchy (go-chee)
