Earthquakes, avalanches, and volcanoes! No, it's not a blockbuster
movie, it's Fall at the Washington State History Museum. Come shake,
rattle, and roll with characters from Washington history and hear
stories of natural disasters in the Pacific Northwest. From the eruption
of Mount St. Helens to the avalanche that felled two Great Northern
trains, students will investigate three natural catastrophes, using
artifacts, ephemera, and photographs to unlock the mysteries of our
geologic past.

Disaster! Natural Catastrophes in the Pacific Northwest uses local
actors to portray historic figures who played a part in one of
Washington state's many natural disasters. Three characters will
present their stories in the Great Hall galleries to help students
understand the physical history of our region, including Washington's
"Ring of Fire."

Upon arriving at the History Museum, students will receive an
orientation and a map of the Great Hall of Washington History that
prompts them to engage with artifacts, historic photos, and other
documents on display. As students make their way through the Great Hall,
they will encounter the actors and learn, through dramatic
interpretation, about the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, the Wellington
avalanche, and blizzards on Mount Rainier. Among those featured are
Harry Truman, the "man who would not go" from Mount St. Helens and
famous movie director Cecil B. DeMille who braved a blizzard on Mount
Rainier to shoot a silent film in 1924.

In addition to being a fun experience for students, this special field
trip program also provides curricular support to teachers before, during
and after their visit. An innovative blend of history, science, and
language arts, the program and its materials can be used to satisfy
EALRs, GLEs, or the classroom-based assessment "Dig Deep."

Disaster! Natural Catastrophes in the Pacific Northwest is available to
school groups Tuesday through Friday, from 10 AM to 12:30 PM,October
14-17, 2008. For more information or to reserve your spot now call
