Dear Washington State Social Studies Council ,
We are asking for you to partner with us to get our community organized to
complete this vision here at Decatur High School in Federal Way. We are also
teaching our students civic and social action in being a part of this
project. They have also learned
a lot about Haiti and the terrible reality of the global food crises right
now. Here at Decatur, two social studies teachers, Ann Kormos and Kim
Meschter, are organizing a MASSIVE food and fund drive to send a 40'
shipping container of food relief to
Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. This will span the
month of May, from the 1st to the 30th.
We need your help!!! . We are asking all community members to help
especially on getting some ideas that would help us to generate the total
cost of our container. The students here were able with a grocery store
drive and collections make it to $ 2000
dollars but we are a long way off from our total of $7,000. The students
especially seniors are continuing to work on this project. Any community
connections you would know or organizations would be helpful as we have been
turned down by Rotary and Bill
Gates foundation and many others. We have been turned down by many
organizations but we are united to make a difference in a place that has
been forgotten by the world. We have benefit concert on Wed May 28 from
7pm-8:30pm so anyone who would be willing
to attend that and leave donations we would be very grateful.
 
We need enough food to fill a 40' shipping container (please see attached
flyer) and $7000 to pay for the container and the shipping.  (Checks can be
written to Decatur HS and put "Haiti" in the memo section so that they go to
the right place.)  I have
started a website at http://operationhaiti.giving.officelive.com to explain
more.  Right now, the collection centers are at Decatur, in rooms 603 and
604 for food. If you would be willing to put collect some food or money that
would be great.  We have
attached a detailed letter of support and a flyer that summarizes the
different types of things that are needed for this drive.
 
Would your be willing to join in on this endeavor?  I know that this is
quite a HUGE request, but I know that if we unite together, we can make a
difference! Any ideas you would have let us know or ways you could help us
out .........
