K-8 Virtual Conference 2024

Collaboration is Social Studies: Roots and Relationships


We are excited to share that our K-8 Conference will be held virtually this year. This conference will feature the value of building relationships with community partners to co-create authentic, relevant and action-oriented learning in social studies.  Community partners will share ways they can partner with teachers to craft engaging lessons that will build students' voice and agency as they prepare for civic life.

9:00-9:50 Opening Pannel: Join us to learn from a panel of community partners about how to co-create community-centered and action-oriented learning experiences for students.  Panelists will offer strategies for how to connect with community partners in your region and cultivate relevant learning experiences for your students.

10:00-10:50 Session 1: Re-Envisioning a Community with City Planners – Eric Nelson, Bellevue School District.  This session will demonstrate on to elevate student voice and agency through civic participation in the redesign of a local neighborhood to meet the need of all community members.  Participants will learn about sustainable city planning guided by the Growth Management Act (GMA) and inclusionary practices about redesign.  Application to K-8 students.

11:00-11:50 Session 2: Centering Since Time Immemorial (STI) Curriculum in a Community – Presented by Lexi Samorano, Highline School District.  This session will illustrate how Highline School District has partnered with the Muckleshoot Tribe to center STI lessons on local history, culture and geography. Participants will learn strategies to center STI lessons on their local community and elevate indigenous voice. Application to K-8 students.
