Whose History? Our History!
The past is a shared resource that helps us make sense of our world, understand our own lives, and plan for the future. It is a connector that ties us to each other and to those who came before us. We lose those connections when histories are hidden, erased, or silenced.
The 2026 Pacific Northwest History Conference will explore how individuals and communities reclaim their histories in the face of these challenges. Authority over which histories are shared is contested because history is powerful. What strategies have people used to lay claim to the past? How have conflicts over the ownership of history resolved themselves—or not? How have connected histories helped us better understand each other? What role do historians play within this work?
